• Christmas, Easter and summer. Boarding houses close. Visa-holding pupils can travel home, or stay in the UK with someone gov.uk’s rules allow (with a nominated guardian, for no more than 27 days in a row: gov.uk); either way the school will ask for travel details in writing.
• Plan guardianship early. gov.uk says a Child Student must have a suitable place to live when not boarding, and if your child stays with someone other than a parent, that person must be a foster carer, a close relative or a nominated guardian; each school also sets its own policy.
